The WRC launched this inquiry in response to a complaint by a group of Palermo workers alleging that, in early June 2012, the company carried out a mass dismissal of employees, as well as other labor rights violations, in retaliation for the workers’ effort to organize a union at the company’s primary manufacturing facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Shortly after workers of the Flying Needle factory formed a union in May 2012, all twelve union leaders were illegally fired.

Star, S.A.

Country: Honduras

The National Labor Committee originally brought the Star factory in Honduras to the attention of the WRC in late 2007. A subsequent investigation by the WRC confirmed that 55 workers had been unlawfully terminated shortly after they had formed a union.

From August 2011 through July 2012, a disturbing pattern of violations of workers’ associational rights re-emerged, including a refusal by management to allow union leaders to carry out their representational functions in the factory; multiple expressions of anti-union animus by managers at the same time that substantial numbers of workers were being laid off, giving rise to fear on the part of workers that union members were being targeted for dismissal; and a failure by management to negotiate in good faith.

After conducting interviews with workers, the WRC found grave and systematic abuses of the rights of this highly vulnerable workforce, including grossly excessive hours of work, severe and constant harassment and psychological abuse, wages far below the legal minimum, oppressive living conditions, discrimination based on national origin, and threats of violence aimed at preventing workers from reporting these abuses to regulatory and law enforcement agencies.

ITIC Apparel

The WRC’s investigation found that ITIC Apparel violates the Sweatfree Contracting Ordinance’s requirements in the areas of wages and hours, freedom of association, harassment and abuse (including sexual harassment), legally mandated benefits, and occupational health and safety.

Jerzees Choloma, Jerzees de Honduras, Jerzees Nuevo Dia

A set of ground-breaking agreements were reached on November 14, 2009 between Russell/Fruit of the Loom and the union representing Jerzees de Honduras (JDH) workers and, separately, between the company and the WRC to address labor rights issues in the company’s operations in Honduras. The agreements were the culmination of WRC investigation and remediation efforts spanning a twenty-six month period.

Kwangduk Langgeng (Formerly PT Kolon Langgeng)

The WRC successfully protected the rights of employees during the closure, a highly contentious process which involved attempts by factory management to avoid severance payments to employees, lock out workers who resisted these moves by the company, and to blacklist employee union representatives.

Gildan Dortex

The WRC launched an investigation of Gildan Dortex, in Guerra, Dominican Republic, in August 2009 in response to a worker complaint. The ensuing investigation documented serious violations of freedom of association including repeated threats and intimidation against workers who were forming a union affiliated to the federation FEDOTRAZONAS.
